背景：时下欧洲足坛转会流言四起，枪手队长亨利再次被推上了“离开阿森纳”的风口浪尖。
 
这似乎是一条“千呼万唤始出来”的消息，当温格在巴黎与巴塞罗那俱乐部的代表面谈时，酋长球场必然要为自己寻找一个新的“酋长”了。
海布里有过国王，那不是亨利或维埃拉，更不是博格坎普，而是土生土长的托尼·亚当斯。亚当斯看上去有些笨拙，而且酗酒让他后来那本自传成为了社会性的话题；1988年初出茅庐便在欧洲杯上被巴斯滕上演帽子戏法，更是让他成为了名闻欧洲的傻瓜。
然而海布里就是以亚当斯定义的：他高耸的鼻梁和睥睨一切的气势，都是枪手的经典造型。贝克汉姆说他第一次代表国家队比赛时，在更衣室里听到亚当斯振臂高呼的呐喊声，“吓得有些心惊肉跳”。亚当斯就是这样一个看起来有些鲁莽却雄健无比的传统英格兰人——他更像是一位斗士，而不仅仅是一个高水准的职业球员。
当年格雷厄姆提拔亚当斯，让他定义了上世纪八、九十年代的海布里。优雅精致、充满想象力的进球，并不是那个时代阿森纳的主题；坚忍不拔、“背心贴后墙”仍不失绝地反击的强韧，才是海布里的印记。那个时代的枪手一点都不好看，可是如果你想从比赛中看到不死不休的勇气，那就应该去海布里，一如丘吉尔在一次演讲中所云：“我没什么可以奉献的。有的．只是热血、辛劳、眼泪和汗水……”
在“boring boring arsenal”（“闷蛋闷蛋阿森纳”）和将海布里（Highbury）比拟成“图书馆”（library，谐音，取过于安静之意）的嘲弄中，就能知道那个时代人们是如何看待亚当斯和阿森纳的。可是一支将热血、辛劳、眼泪和汗水浇灌出来的球队，即便足球丑陋，其精神之伟大，也永远值得人们尊敬。
2002 年亚当斯退役时，他已经成为了一个诗人：他戒酒已经6年，还发起建立了一个帮助职业球员的心理咨询项目。他的教练生涯开始得并不顺利，先在荷兰学习一年，后接手低等级俱乐部韦康比，时日不长便不欢而散，直到一年多以前到朴茨茅斯辅佐老雷德克纳普，托尼才算回到了一线足球事务中。
2002年夺取双冠王时，亚当斯拉着副队长维埃拉一道捧起足总杯：硬鼻子亚当斯是个嗓音足以震慑寰宇的人，他的法国接任者却不善言辞。随后维埃拉接过队长袖标，又声明要以自己在场上的表现来发挥队长作用。性格差异，表达方式不同，当然可以接受，但维埃拉在球场上也确实是和亚当斯风格类似的铮铮铁汉。只是此时，阿森纳铁血队长的痕迹已经在慢慢淡化。
维埃拉在阿森纳踢了9个赛季，只差一年他就能以自己的纪念赛作为海布里的告别赛。然而自从维埃拉担任队长后，几乎每个夏天都会有他将加盟皇马或者其他欧洲豪门的传言。2004年欧洲杯后，“阿森纳队长”几乎去意已定，并打算拒绝球队在奥地利的新赛季训练营，但最后一刻，法国人还是选择了留下。
这似乎是一个句号，但是在温格看来，却是一个起点。一年之后，维埃拉在本人尚不知晓的情况下，被卖到尤文图斯……谁也不知道整个决策的内幕。
                            
 
另一个法国人接着成了队长：天纵其才的亨利，锐不可当的亨利，只是他的队长风格，和两位硬鼻子不同。他是充满创意和灵感的，他是集万千宠爱于一身的，他的情绪却也是起伏不定的。
亨利拜将，我反而逐渐觉得枪手那股不屈不挠的斗士之魂在消失，尤其是离开海布里后。不应该为此责怪亨利，他仍然是我最欣赏的球员，然而当足球比赛随时可能变成生死搏杀时，当球场上充满了太多小提琴手时，你需要一个粗莽的斗士来击出那振聋发聩的最强音。
亨利真想走吗？我不能不愚蠢地怀疑着，正如对维埃拉倏然离去的疑虑。他说俱乐部要表现出强化实力的迹象，才能说服他留下。这是说给媒体看的。我相信嗷嗷待哺的枪手球迷想要说的，更应该是“当俱乐部跌入低谷时，我们需要一个大写的队长挺身而出。”
我们不能因为一个饱受伤病折磨的赛季，来指责法国人的表现。17场联赛进10个球，亨利仍然是这个地球上最出色的得分手，尤其是他能给足球带来那种罕见的速度之美。可他同时也是枪手的队长，像博格坎普那么一个从来不希望成为球队领袖的人，戴过一次队长袖标后，都发现了这东西的魔力……亨利怎么能轻松放下？
他在模棱两可中流露着去意，一个完美的职业生涯，对他来说只缺少一座欧洲冠军杯，然而，那只是一种个体的职业生涯。
我无法不爱亚当斯，尽管他有丑陋笨拙的一面。亨利，我怎么才能爱你？
逃避 2001夏天，输掉足总杯决赛的亨利在老队长亚当斯的安慰下，仍然不肯接受现实；而2004-05赛季，亨利几次临时接过维埃拉的队长袖标，也总是显得信心不足。
